Things to consider before pursuing residency

In this the 2nd video I dive in a bit deeper.  I’ll touch on a few areas so often overlooked until after you’ve already made your final immigration decision. I revisit why I feel it’s mandatory owning at least two passports. An exit strategy, an extra queen on the board, a get out of jail card call it what you will just so long as your entire family has one.  I’ll recap how it’s a vital part to everyone’s sovereignty.

I’ll provide some thought provoking instances regarding should I even have a DR residency or citizenship. Is it worth it for ME? I’ll briefly touch on how easy it is to legally stay in the country by simply extending your tourist visa. For many this might prove to be the best option.

Other areas of interest such as will I ever even use this passport? Probably Not and I’ll explain why. I round off this second video by bringing up the subject what if you already have two passports and why this should be a concern specifically to American citizens. My conclusion is DR residency is not for everybody. Just one more example of how everything’s a various shade of grey. On the final video I’ll discuss what are the costs and my final conclusion. Until next time this is Barry in DR.

    Hi Barry,
Another very good immigration explanation and very practical. I didn’t realize how dirt cheap it is to get a visa extension to stay. If I’m correct in reading your scrolling figures on your video a one year extension is $111.00 USD and a ten year extension is $1,500 USD at the current exchange rate. For those who want to buy a home, live in it, just survive off of your US investments or your social security and will never earn income in the DR then this is dirt cheap. If you need a second passport and the DR is the only candidate for you then of course you have to go through the much more expensive permanent residency first.
One question Barry. Does the visa extension get nullified the second you leave the DR or is the extension time valid no matter how many times your come and go.

By the way I like the practical information you are now providing in your blog posts.
    Keep up the great work.

Hi Gary, What you do is purchase the extension for approximately the length of time residing. From what I understand it does get nullified. This is why you’re better of renewing every one or two years. If for some reason you overstay all they should do is bump you up to the next level. Of course the staff at the airport will try to squeeze a few extra dollars from you but if you hold your ground they will eventually pretend to get frustrated and wave you through.
Glad you like changes regarding the blog posts and topics. Nice to hear from you again.
